Trimming

Updated: Feb 3, 2022

Discover how to properly trim your cedar hedge, when to prune it and how!

The best time to prune your cedar or conifer hedge is in June, although it is still possible to extend this period until September. Whenever you do it, we advise against trimming hedges during a heat wave or severe drought.

In addition, it is important to prune in the new wood since the new wood regenerates much faster than the older wood.

Thus, it is recommended to eliminate between 1/3 and 2/3 of the new shoots in order to maximize the growth and density of your hedges.

What is the ideal shape for my cedar hedge?

The shape of your cedar hedge must also be wider at the base and rounded at the top so that sunlight can reach the base of your hedge.

It is essential to avoid trimming your hedge in the shape of a square, rectangle or inverted trapeze since the weight of snow, ice, or a significant snowfall could potentially open your hedge.
